Engineering Certificates

CERTIFICATE IN GLOBAL ENGINEERING

The Certificate in Global Engineering is available to those studying Engineering and interested in learning more about global issues and how they can affect and enhance conditions all over the world. Classes focus on concepts like global energy, new finance techniques, foreign aid, effects of emerging technologies in developing economies and current theories in global development and foreign aid. Engineering students that have not yet earned a degree are eligible to sign up for this certificate program.

CERTIFICATE IN BUSINESS ENGINEERING

This certificate is available to Engineering students that are concerned with acquiring more knowledge about the business attributes of engineering, from economics to marketing and adding a specialization of management and leadership. These courses target accounting and economics with a choice between strategy and marketing or organizational behaviour combined with marketing. Engineering students, with theexception of those in the Engineering Science  Statistics, Mathematics and Finance Options, are qualified for participation in this minor.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP CERTIFICATE

Combining progressive reasoning, solid problem resolution abilities and technical knowledge, engineers are among the most successful entrepreneurs in today's business world. Additionally, the massive growth of the online, or e-economy, has allowed many younger people to gain early successes. There are many forms and shapes of entrepreneurial professionals; many entrepreneurs own a business that gives them complete control of their own success. There are others that work inside of a larger firm as intrapreneurs, which are in demand by mid to large-sized businesses. These people have the entrepreneurial spirit but prefer working with a larger business over owning their own company. No matter the environment, these are among the most capable people to lead a business. This is even more true during trying financial times like we are currently living in, as today, strategic technology uses often guide success.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT AND PREVENTATIVE ENGINEERING CERTIFICATE

Engineers have enormous accountability—their plans and systems can enhance the quality of life for millions of people; but things can go horribly wrong if the design and implementation is not executed perfectly. An elective program of three courses leading to this certificate is available at the Centre for Technology and Social Development. This certificate can help upcoming engineers be as environmentally and socially adept as they are competent with technology.  Additionally, its goal is to teach students the anticipation of consequences of their decision-making and design and how to prevent or reduce any harmful or unintended affects on people, society and Earth.

An especially lucrative skill set is preventative engineering; the effects of a preventive orientation are known to be more cost-effective than traditional equivalents. Reports on the  vocational paths of engineers demonstrate that many engineers progress into managerial or administrative roles that require a broader background. The perception of how technology intertwines with society, human life and the Earth itself is vital to understanding how labour, capital and knowledge are converted to desired end products.

LEADERSHIP IN ENGINEERING CERTIFICATE

The Engineering Certificate in Strategy and Leadership is a program of credit courses along with a capstone experience. The curriculum for this certificate includes business and professional speaking, leadership style and strategy and organizational behaviour. Students take courses side-by-side those that are emerging leaders in the liberal arts and sciences programs. The faculty of the College of Engineering teaches courses on topics like ethics, engineering law, technical team building, project management, globalization and technology. This is followed by a seminar taught by the dean of engineering.

The Engineering Certificate in Strategy and Leadership requires 21 credit hours to be completed, this is generally satisfied by completing seven three credit hour courses. Only nine of the required hours has to be unique to the certificate; meaning, only those nine credit hours should not be counted toward the satisfaction of the major or minor degree requirements.

Upon completion of the certificate, students will be able to exhibit:

  • Knowledge of various sorts of authority and important concepts of leadership.

  • The importance of ethical, cultural, diversity and decision-making for effectual leadership.
  • Engagement with mentored service to the University, a co-operative educational/occupational program or a study-abroad experience.
